Solar in Cyprus in 2026: The rules keep moving. Here’s how to actually get it right.
If you’ve been thinking about solar in Cyprus for your home in the Paphos region – anywhere from Polis and Latchi and all of Cyprus, you’ve probably noticed something. Every time you look into it, the answer seems to have changed.
That’s not you being confused. The rules genuinely keep moving.
What’s actually going on with Solar in Cyprus?
Here’s the honest state of play, in plain English.
Net Billing is now the scheme for new installations. In simple terms: the electricity your panels export to the grid is metered as a credit in kilowatt-hours, and that credit is offset against the power you import, at the end of each two-month billing cycle. Any surplus rolls forward – and once a year, around November, the accumulated credit resets to zero.
Some of the detail is still being confirmed. For example, whether that offset holds at a straight 1:1 ratio or whether exported power is settled at the wholesale rate is not yet nailed down – there isn’t a clean test case to point to yet. We’d rather tell you that than pretend it’s settled.
The grid in our region is under pressure. The EAC has flagged parts of the transmission network – the Polis region included – as “saturated” with renewable generation. In practice that means when your Terms of Connection are issued, exporting excess power to the grid may or may not be permitted. The current expectation is that domestic producers will still be allowed to export, at least for now, but that’s guidance, not a guarantee.
Curtailment is a real thing. Through what’s called Ripple Control, the grid can effectively tell your system to stop exporting during certain periods. That surprises a lot of people who assumed their panels would always run flat out.
None of this means solar is a bad idea in Cyprus. It’s still one of the best places on the planet to generate your own power. It does mean the decision is no longer “get panels, job done.”
This is why you don’t want an installer for Solar. You want an advisor.
Anyone can bolt panels to a roof and say “yeah, we can do that.” Plenty of companies will.
The value in 2026 isn’t the installation – it’s knowing which route actually fits your property before anyone touches your roof. Single-phase or three-phase supply, whether you add battery storage, how and when you actually use electricity, how much you care about staying independent of the grid – all of that changes what the right system looks like. Get it wrong and you’ve oversized, undersized, or built something the grid won’t let you export from.
We assess first and recommend second. Sometimes that means a full grid-connected system. Sometimes it means something much simpler that sidesteps the paperwork entirely. The point is that it’s the right thing for your situation, not a default package.
Your real options for Solar in Cyprus, mapped to your situation
If you’re going new and grid-connected (Net Billing). System size depends on your supply. Single-phase: up to a 4.16 kWp array with a 4 kW inverter – or up to 5 kWp with a 5 kW inverter if you include battery storage (BESS). Three-phase: up to 8 kWp without a battery, up to 10.4 kWp with one. There’s also an Occasional Zero Export option worth knowing about: when the grid triggers a curtailment, instead of shutting your system down entirely, it keeps powering your own loads and simply stops exporting. That’s a smart hedge against the saturation issue.
If you’re already on Net Metering. Good news, with one honest caveat. Current information indicates that existing Net Metering contracts are retained and continue unaffected even if you modify the system – expanding your PV and inverter, adding a battery, or adding Occasional Zero Export. The caveat: we’re still awaiting official EAC confirmation that this holds in every case, and the exact size limits on expansions aren’t fully clear yet. We’ll tell you where the certainty ends.
If you’d rather skip the EAC application entirely.
For the right property, there are genuinely clever routes that avoid grid interconnection and inspection altogether:
- Fully off-grid with battery storage – technically only permitted at a property with no grid connection, but a strong option where that applies.
- PV pool pump – solar panels drive a DC pump that circulates your pool water whenever there’s enough sun. Your main AC pump stays in place for cleaning and cloudy spells, but the day-to-day circulation runs on free solar.
- PV air-conditioning – panels feed an outdoor compressor that blends solar with mains power to hit your target temperature or runs in an eco-mode on solar alone. Cooling in summer and heating in winter, powered largely by the thing Cyprus has in abundance.
These three are the no-red-tape plays. They won’t suit every home, but where they fit, they’re often the smartest move on the table.
